Enrichment STREAM Activities

Alternative and Reusable Energy

Students will discover that energy exists freely in nature and learn to differentiate between renewable and non-renewable energy.  They will look at alternative energy sources like Camp Kappe’s solar panels and wind turbine, how those alternative/renewable energy sources work, and identify the benefits of renewable energy here at Camp Kappe.  Students will also conduct experiments using these alternative forms and reflect about the negative consequences of using non-renewable resources.

Animal Husbandry

Students physically interact with a variety of farm animals, observing their needs, habitats and learning about their life cycle.  They will investigate the mutually beneficial relationship between humans and these domesticated animals.

Aquatic Life: Fish Dissection

Students will explore the diverse aquatic life located in a forest pond and their role within this ecosystem.  Students will explore the anatomy of a perch by observing the exterior and dissecting the interior of the fish to develop a better understanding of how the fish anatomy helps it to adapt to its environment.  They will also realize the mutual benefits that fish and humans share on the earth.

Astronomy

When weather permits students will observe the night sky and any visible constellations/asterisms, planets, and the moon through telescopes and learn how they move and exist in the night sky.

Biodegradability and the Un-Natural Trail

In nature, there is no waste because everything gets recycled. The waste products from one organism become the food for others, providing nutrients and energy while breaking down the waste organic matter. Some organic materials will break down much faster than others, but all will eventually decay. Students will discover how long it takes for every day materials to decompose on earth.  They will see how our choices directly affect the planet, this gift that God has given us.

Ecology

Students will study both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and then compare life forms as well as their adaptations to their environment.  Students are then challenged to think of ways to sustain these creatures as good stewards of the earth.

Erosion and Water Mechanics

Students will discover the power of water as they witness how it moves through and interacts with its surrounding ecosystem in our creeks and other parts of the Camp Kappe watershed.  They will conduct experiments on the effects of erosion and the importance of soil conservation while incorporating Catholic teaching and the sacredness of water in scripture and the sacraments.

Forest and Field

From fields of prairie grass, to a diverse forest of hard and soft wood trees, shrubs, wildflowers and brush, students will experience the diverse ecosystems around Camp Kappe.  They will discuss the wildlife that inhabits these ecosystems and explore ways to persevere their habitats.  They will see the glory of God’s creations, and understand their role of having dominion and responsibility over this earth.

Garden and Sustainability

Students participate in the process of planting, tending, harvesting, and eating vegetables grown in the garden.  In the process, they learn about the scientific principles by which plants provide energy for humans, sustainability of crops and the effects on the environment.

Global Village

Global village provides students with a unique experience in understanding different cultures and the environmental, economic, social and governmental factors that shape the daily life of their citizens. Students encounter dwellings from around the world and participate in activities to help them explore the joys and hardships that each country may face.  Through problem solving activities, we will reflect on how our Catholic Social Teaching challenges each of us to go forth and help our brothers and sisters, as well as learning how we each can make a difference in the world.

Night Hike

Through the night hiking activity, youth will search and discuss nocturnal animals and how they have adapted their bodies to nocturnal living (especially hearing and sight). Through deductive reasoning, they will discuss the benefits and obstacles of nocturnal life while participating in sight and hearing based activities that help them to relate to the nocturnal animal experience.

Water Ecology/Pollution

God calls us to care for our environment, especially the resource of water.  Students will conduct water testing at one of the two water sources on Camp Kappe for various traits, chemicals and pollutants, to determine how the water quality affects the aquatic and wildlife that use it. They will ponder the impact humans have on the watersheds and the environment. As stewards of God’s planet, students will understand how they are called to help protect and preserve this valuable resource.

Archery

Students will be taught the parts of the bow and the proper techniques in using the bow and arrow.  They will discuss the different usage of archery from hunting to recreation target sport.  Students will also get a chance to use these techniques to fire at inanimate nonmoving targets.

Canoeing

Students will be taught the basics about canoeing and boating safety including the proper ways to enter and exit a canoe, as well as proper strokes to maneuver the canoe within the pond.

Camp Fire Experience

Youth will participate in the S.E.E. campfire while enjoying stories, songs and games and specific themes each night. During the evening, they will be invited to use their own gifts and talents by creating skits, stories and games which help summarize their S.E.E. Experiences.

Dance & Music

Different cultures dance for different reasons:  thanksgiving, celebrations, ritual or social.  We will explore how different dance styles and cultures shape our world view and explore the reasons why humans dance.  Students will also learn songs to help enrich their S.E.E. experience.

Fishing (Seasonal)

Students will learn the parts of a fishing reel as well as proper technique and use of the reel to catch fish.

Nature Craft

Student will use their creative skills to complete a variety of nature crafts to assist them in applying some of the essential skills explored in our learning themes, like recycling, animal husbandry, global and cultural sustainability.     They will be able to take with them to remind them of their S.E.E. Experience.

Recreation Room Time

Campers will get to spend time in St. Frassati Recreation Center which has shuffleboard, pool table, ping pong, air hockey, basketball accrade game and board games.

Orienteering

Students will be taught navigational skills using a compass to get from point to point on designated trails of varying difficulty.

Team Building

God calls us to live and to work together as the Body of Christ.  Youth will learn leadership and relational skills to assist them in working together and share their gifts and ideas as a team.  Through specific team building activities, games, sharing a cabin and assisting with camp chores, they will get a better understanding of working together to achieve their goals.

Water Splash Game Day

Campers will participate in a wide variety of water games and activities.
